One-on-One with Logan McGuinness
TheBoxingExaminer.com recently caught up with undefeated Jr. Lightweight prospect Logan McGuinness after his most recent victory in Montreal. McGuinness survived a real war with Mexican vetern Pedro Navarrete (24-7-3 13KO’s) See what Logan had to say about the fight and more…
a
a
First I want to congratulate you on your latest win in Montreal against Pedro Navarrete.
a
Thank you!
a
So now you’ve improved to 10-0 you’ve had a tough 8 rounder will you move up to 10 rounds in the near future.
a
Yeah, I’d say maybe a couple more 8 rounders then definitely a 10 rounder, but I’m ready for 10 but it’s up to Adam Harris of Hennessey Sports Canada.
a
You were getting hit early on in the fight against Navarrete, who is an experienced veteran with right hands how did you nullify that?
a
Right away after the first round when I came back to the corner Chris told me to start doubling up my jab up. When I was throwing a single jab out there I noticed he was catching me, he was coming over top with his right hand, he had a good counter right. Chris told me to double or triple up my jab or feint my jab but not to throw a single jab.
a
a
That was a major step up in competition he had more than 30 pro fights and a winning record, he’d been 10 tough rounds with Japanese based Mexican Jorge Linares in Japan only 1 year before he won the world title. Do you think that separates you from the rest of the pack in Canada?
a
Definitely, I think it separates me from everyone in my weight class in Canada. I don’t think any of those guys have been in with a guy like Navarrete. I went from fighting guys with winning records below .500 to a guy that had been in a competitive fight with a guy that went on to win a world championship. I think it was a huge step up for me. Some people thought it was going to be too big of a step up for me right away but I think I proved the critics wrong.
a
I’d say you definitely did, you showed mettle beyond your years. You took some hellacious shots and came back with your own. I know you got hit with an elbow early on in the fight that shook you up but you survived and cam back in the round. So how you assess your overall performance?
a
I’m really hard on myself so maybe a 70, I thought I got hit way too much. Defence is a big thing with us and I think I got hit with a lot of shots wouldn’t have normally got hit with. We didn’t have much time to warm up either there was suppose to be an 8 round fight right before I went on and that ended in the 1st round. As Chris was putting my gloves on they came in and said you’re on now, so I was cold. The first couple of rounds I was just trying to warm up.
a
I know in the days leading up to the fight there was talk of you pulling out due to an injury that you sustained in training the week of the fight. What made you decide to go through with the fight?
a
It happened the Sunday before the fight, I was sparring a little too close to a fight and I ended up with bruised ribs. I just kept telling my team to just give me one more day and we’ll see how it feels. I got some treatment and by Wednesday I felt like I could fight. I’m a fighter that’s the way I am maybe I should have pulled out but I’m glad I work through it a gritted out the win.
a
I want to ask you about your weight in this fight. 129.9 lbs, that’s the lightest of your career, do you plan on staying at Super Featherweight?
a
Yes, we’re going to start campaigning at 130lbs. If we’re fighting in Ontario we might do some catch weight fights because of the same day weigh in but I think we’re going to be fighting at 130lbs from now on.
a
Do you have anything lined up for your next fight yet?
a
We want to stay busy, maybe early April or May.
a
Is there anything you like to say in closing?
a
Yes, I’d like to thank TheBoxingExaminer.com for taking the time to come talk to me and I’d also like to thank Adam Harris of Hennessy Sports Canada for all he’s done, my trainer Chris Johnson and the rest of my team. I want to thank my family and friends for their continued support.
a
