On May 7, Pier Olivier Cote (15-0-0) and Aris Ambriz (15-1-1) will square off in an eight round lightweight contest in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the undercard of the Pacquaio-Mosley WBO welterweight title contest. This fight is buried at least five fights deep into the event, below names like Pacquaio, Mosley, Pavlik and Arce. With this in mind, I would be surprised if the Cote-Ambriz fight gets much coverage outside of Canada. This is unfortunate, as both fighters are rising stars in the lightweight division, worthy of the boxing world’s attention.

In his most recent outing, Pier Olivier Cote announced himself as a legitimate contender by demolishing Mexico City’s Michael Lozada (36-6-1) via KO1. The only other man to dispatch Lozada in one round was the late Edwin Valero (then 20-0-0) back in 2007. In that fight Cote used his speed to overwhelm his noticeably larger opponent, landing several huge right hands on his way to the knockout victory. Although Lozada is by no means a durable opponent – he was stopped by the light punching, pugilistic tactician, Paulie Malignaggi – the accuracy and power of Cote’s punches would have dropped many sturdier foes. Cesar Soriano (21-26-0), a man who went the distance with the always relentless Logan McGuinness, for example, had his jaw broken by Cote in just thirty seconds of action. It was the first TKO/KO1 loss of Soriano’s forty-six fight career. If Cote finds a home for his power shots expect Ambriz to hit the canvas regularly.

Aris Ambriz

Aris Ambriz of Azusa, California, is a well-travelled prospect, with a loss and a draw to Jose Reynoso (then 11-3-0) representing the only blemishes on his otherwise sparkling record. After defeating Ambriz, Reynoso went on to win the Caribbean Boxing Federation light welterweight title against Hector Serrano (13-0-0), a man Ambriz also defeated shortly thereafter. Ambriz earned thirteen victories in a row to start his career, eight of which came by way of knockout.  Since then, however, he suffered his setbacks against Reynoso and couldn’t find his knockout punch against Serrano or Hector Alatorre (16-11-0). To be fair, Alatorre has a concrete chin, suffering only one knockout in fifteen defeats. To defeat Cote, however, Ambriz will need a knockout. If the power of Cote doesn’t finish Ambriz, the young Quebecois’ work rate will.

Prediction Cote by knockout before round four.
