Pascal vs Hopkins II: Officials

Posted by on May 20, 2011 at 22:13 pm

Refereeing the bout will be Ian John-Lewis of the UK. The judges are Rey Denesco of the Philippines, Guido Cavalleri of Italy and Anek Hontongkam of Thailand.

Mike Griffin, one of the best referees of today, has been assigned to be the substitute referee by the WBC in conjunction with the Quebec Boxing Commission, for the WBC Light Heavyweight match between WBC Champion Jean Pascal and WBC Emeritus Champion Bernard Hopkins tomorrow night at the Montreal Bell Centre.

The WBC has taken the initiative to appoint substitute referees in order to be ready in case any situations would prevent the official appointed referee from continuing the bout, such as a health problem, injury etc….

Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 knockouts) hopes to become the oldest world champion in boxing history at age 46 by defeating Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs).

This weekend GYM Promotions along with Golden boy promotion will present the co-feature of the night on HBO.  Former two time light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (29-1-0, 17 KO’s) will face former WBC Light heavyweight champion Adrian “The Shark” Diaconu.  Only hours before the fight, the TheBoxingExaminer.com had the opportunity occasion to interview Chad Dawson about his goal to reign once again the division.

a

TheBoxingExaminer:  Welcome back to Montreal Chad. How are doing?

Chad Dawson:  Very good and ready to get it on.

a

TBE:  You hold impressive victories over Eric Harding, Tomasz Adamek, Glen Johson twice, and Antonio Tarver twice in your young career.  Your thoughts?

CD:  Those are important wins for me and I already won two titles in the Light Heavyweight division.  I am going into this fight in great shape and very determined.  Adrian Diaconu is no push over.  He is aggressive and fights coming forward, but my game plan is ready.

One-on-One With Adrian Diaconu

This weekend in Montreal, GYM Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, along with Interbox will present the co-feature live on HBO as former WBC Light Heavyweight champion Adrian “The Shark” Diaconu (27-2-0, 15 KO’s) will face former two time Light Heavyweight Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (29-1-0, 17 KO’s).  TheBoxingExaminer.com had a chance to catch up with Diaconu and ask a few questions about one of his toughest opponents so far in his career.
a

TheBoxingExaminer:  Good Morning Adrian, how are you feeling?
Adrian Diaconu:  100% ready!

a

TBE:  Chad Dawson represents a big challenge for you.  How did you prepare for such a fight?
AD:  Well, I had the chance to work closely with Stéphane Larouche and also my trainer Pierre Bouchard for two intensive months in training camp.  Unlike Chad Dawson, I don’t often change trainers.  I have a huge respect for Emanuel Steward, but he won’t be able to help him in the ring.  There are only two people fighting, me and him.  I am ready mentally and physically, I know Dawson is a great adversary and I’m going to show him my power.  Saturday night, the Shark will prevail. Anthony “Rowdy” Russell Turning Negatives to Positive Against Fonfara

Posted by on May 20, 2011 at 08:44 am

Canadian light heavyweight Anthony “The Rowdy One” Russell (16-2-1, 5 KOs) isn’t expecting a warm welcome when he steps into the ring this Friday  at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago to face Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara for the NABO title.

Polish fighters in Chicago are like rock stars.

While some might feel intimidated, Russell has an interesting way of looking at the situation. “How’s it going to affect me? The question is how is that going to affect him? That’s pressure is on him. I hope he fights the fan’s fight, because if he does, he’ll make more mistakes. Once that bell rings, there are two guys fighting. I just hope the referee isn’t his uncle.”

Russell, originally from Kitchener, Ontario, but now residing in Brockton, Massachusetts, had 131 amateur fights and was the National Canadian Light-Heavyweight Champion in 2002. He won the Ontario Provincial Championship five times. Read More

Bernard Hopkins-Jean Pascal II Pre-Fight Analysis: Does Pascal have the Stamina to Combat a Legend?

Posted by on May 20, 2011 at 08:39 am

By GM ROSS

It sounds ludicrous, but at this point boxing fans around the world must be wondering if Ring, WBC and IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal has the stamina to defeat Bernard Hopkins. Pascal is eighteen years the junior of Hopkins, yet it was the younger man that slowed down in the later rounds of their first encounter. Pascal barely made it out of their last meeting with his title, practically handing over the fight in the later rounds. All that saved his crown was a couple knockdowns and some dubious judging. Unless something’s drastically changed, “B-Hop” will become the oldest world champion in history on Saturday, May 21, in Montreal, Quebec. Read More
