A Few Words With The Cobra, Carl Froch

By Jeff Emond Jeffrey

On the eve of the Manny Pacquiao/Shane Mosley fight, WBC Super Middleweight champion Carl Froch was in Las Vegas, to talk about his next fight with Glen Johnson, and his accomplishments in the Super-Six tournament. The Boxing Examiner.com seized this rare occasion to ask the British fighter a few questions about IBF Super Middleweight champion, Lucian Bute.

The Boxing Examiner: How are you Cobra?

Carl Froch: Very nice of you to say that, you can call me Carl.

TBE: Your next fight will be with the Road Warrior, Glen Johnson. Your thoughts?

CF: Well, he is a very solid and insistent fighter. It’s not gonna be an easy fight but I will win it and after I’m done with Johnson, I will defeat Ward in a very exciting final of the Super-Six tournament.

TBE: Do you plan to unify the titles?

CF: Definitely! I will have to get Lucian Bute’s IBF crown after the Super-Six.

TBE: After disposing of Edison Miranda, Bute declared to Max Kellerman that he was the best Super Middleweight in the world. What are your thoughts about that statement?

CF: I don’t agree at all and will prove very soon that I am the best in the division. I don’t know how he can say such a thing without being in the Super-Six, all the best Super Middleweight fighters are in that tournament and he’s not, to me that says a lot about him. To be the best, you have to beat the best, I have very important victories over Arthur Abraham, Andre Direll, Jermain Taylor and one of your champions, Jean Pascal and a very close fight with Mikkel Kessler. Since Miranda, Bute has not fought very serious opposition.

TBE: Bute will fight Jean-Paul Mendy of France this summer. How do you feel about that fight?

CF: It’s not a serious fight like I said. Magee is a strong Irishman, that’s true, but he did not belong in that title fight and Brinkley and Mendy are easy fights for him. How did Mendy become the number one contender by a disqualification win against Bika? More so, Bika knocked down Mendy in the first round.

TBE: Do you plan to fight Bute? If you do, what would be your game plan?

CF: I will put pressure on him. I notice Bute doesn’t fight well going backwards just like in his first encounter with Librado Andrade and I will take his title away from him.

TBE: Thank you for your time Carl and good luck against Johnson.

CF: No problem!
