CPBC Press Release: This past weekend, May 27-28, George Chuvalo was in Moncton, New Brunswick, to discuss the dangers of drug and substance abuse. The event was promoted by Eloquent One Promotions and was kicked off with a meet and greet at the Sports Rock Bar and Restaurant in Dieppe on May 27. George shook hands, chatted with admirers and signed autographs for an hour before dinner was served at 6:30 pm. When the meal was served the restaurant was absolutely jammed with fans and well wishers, illustrating the impact Chuvalo has had on many of Greater Moncton’s residents.

Miss Gisele Doiron acted as master of ceremonies for the evening. During dinner, Gisele announced that she had a surprise for George. She then proceeded to invite Charley Foster – a man who reported on the Ali-Chuvalo contest live from Toronto – to the podium to reminisce about the historic contest. During his talk, Foster recalled seeing Ali’s legs wobble against Chuvalo, stating that he thought Ali would hit the canvas. But, as we all know too well, Ali stayed up. Foster then admitted that he had waited forty years to have his Ali-Chuvalo program signed. George obliged with happiness and laughter.

George Doiron, a Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) official, then took the podium and shared a story with the audience, recalling the first time he met George Chuvalo as a young man. Mr. Doiron then read a letter from the CPBC inviting Chuvalo to the podium. Doiron, along with CPBC president Don Collette, then proceeded to award Chuvalo an honorary lifetime championship and a genuine CPBC championship belt. As you can see in the photos of the event, Chuvalo was thrilled with the presentation. This brought an end to a very successful and enjoyable evening with the champ.

The following day, May 28, an impressive audience congregated at the Wesleyan Conference Centre on Saint George Boulevard to hear Chuvalo’s presentation on the dangers of substance abuse. He spoke of his wife and three sons, all of whom he lost to substance abuse, to illustrate to those in attendance just how dangerous such activities can be. It was a heart wrenching speech that touched all in attendance. Rather than giving up in the midst of all this misfortune, Mr. Chuvalo has made it his mission to help others avoid the substances that stole his family members. After the champ’s wonderful talk, Dan Baker, an expert on grieving, provided some advice to the audience before he and Chuvalo fielded questions from the crowd. Thank you to George Chuvalo, Dan Baker, Eloquent One Promotions and Danny and Paul Doiron for a job well done. It was truly an inspiring and educational weekend.
