Canada’s Golden Girls

Two ladies have accomplished a feat that has not been seen since the early 1970′s and that is to win a gold medal at the Pan American Games for Canada.  Mary Spencer of Windsor and Mandy Bujold of Kitchener won gold in Guadalajara, Mexico this weekend.  Spencer at the 75kg division and Bujold at 51kg’s.  This is amazing especially since the IOC has only allowed three weight divisions in women’s boxing at events such as the Pan American Games and the 2012 Olympics.

The Canadian women were able to meet Canada’s Governor General David Johnston today, who was in attendance.  In addition, Mary Spencer has been given the honour to carry Canada’s flag today at the closing ceremonies.

On Friday night October 28th Spencer controlled most of the bout against her opponent from the Dominican Republic and finished with a score of 15 -11.

Saturday October 29th according to Rick Cadilha of the Waterloo Boxing Academy and coach of Bujold:
“Valencia was content with holding a majority of the bout and had little in the way of offence.  The score at the end of the first round was 1-0 for Bujold. The second round appeared to be the same as the first round, with neither girl mounting any sort of offence. At the end of the second round the score was 2-2. Feeling a sense of urgency, Valencia began to open up with her offence and Bujold capitalized by quick counter-punching which resulted in a 6-3 lead for Bujold.  The fourth and final round saw Bujold herself establish an attack against the Colombian boxer. Valencia was unable to sustain the pace and was content to hold and tie up the Canadian boxer. Bujold still managed to score points and at the end of the bout registered a 11-5 lead and the Gold Medal.”

Hussain Mian-Imtiaz of Quebec lost to Oscar Molina of Mexico on points 14-7.  Mian comes home with a bronze! Sandra Bizier lost her bout to Erika Cruz also of Mexico on points 12-6 and earned the bronze medal.

A special thanks goes out to Rick Cadilha of the Waterloo Boxing club who flew down to Mexico on his own dime and gave Canadian boxing fans awesome up to date information and fantastic pictures.  Our national boxing governing body needs to wake up and reflect upon who the “real” boxing people are in this country and support them and get rid of the dead weight.  Cadilha gave more and consistent up to date boxing information out in one week in Mexico than Boxing Canada does on their website in a month!

Boxing Canada’s website has been a joke since it was first opened. Boring, out of date usually and tardy in posting information. Point is the execs at Boxing Canada don’t really give a rats A_s about the website.
