Nansoor Esmail Memorial Show Results
By Brad Hortie
On Friday November 25, 2011 at the Crossroads Market in Calgary, Kevin McDermott and Doug Retti, along with all the other fine folks associated with the Calgary Boxing Club, hosted the first annual Manssor Esmail Memorial show.
Huge kudos to the CBC, for an awesome job. Well run show, small, but quaint, and comfortable venue and a somewhat short but very entertaining 9 bouts.
Paurul Ahlawat snatched Best Boxer of the night with a smartly planned battle. Ahlawat faced a hard hitting, non stop, in your face kid in Roger Redoble of the host Calgary club.
The game Redoble went after Ahlawat, from the onset attempting to pin his opponent on the ropes where he had some success in the early going firing looping but heavy shots. By midpoint in the round the slickster hailing out the Main Event Boxing Club solved the aggressive style of Redoble and put some great counter punching skills to work.
As the second round progressed Main Events Ahlawat lit a fire and combined beautiful lateral movement with sharp and accurate counter punching to pull well ahead of the now tiring Redoble.
The final stanza provided more of the same, but fatigue, was now taking its toll on Redoble and Ahlawat landed crisp 3 and 4 point combos almost a will.
Redoble came in with limited experience but as an open boxer by virtue of his MMA/martial arts history.
“Hes aggressive and tough man I hit him with some nice uppercuts and some hard left hands and he just kept coming” brimmed the lanky southpaw.
Looks like MMAs loss will be boxing’s gain.
In a provincial final which was left over from last weeks tournament (category with 5 or more competitors), Tanner Wilson, of Medicine Hat met last weeks overall BEST BOXER, Ashton Lytwinuk of Main Event in Edmonton.
An early onslaught by Wilson, coupled with slow start by Lytwinuk, may have been enough to help the Medicine Hat native squeak out a lead after the first round. In this writers opinion, Lytwinik found his range and established a quick but solid jab and took control of the bout although Wilson was able to land his trademark right uppercut a strong Lytwink seemed to be getting the better of the inside exchanges.
In the third and final segment Wilson was running out of gas and Lytwinuk became increasingly aggressive. Both boxers battled hard but Lytwinuk overpowered and outlasted his opposition in the only round that was awarded to him by all five of the judges at ringside. The Main Event coaching staff felt they had certain victory but the judges saw it otherwise and awarded a 4-1, majority victory in favor of Tanner Wilson, the new 69 Sr. open provincial champion. Shortly following the bout it was learned that Lytwinik suffered a strained right rotator cuff in a inside skirmish in the first round. “The doc (ringside doctor in attendance) said I will need to keep icing it for the next 48 hrs and it should be good to go next weekend. I’m gonna focus on my cardio and my technique that wont bug my shoulder. I still wanna go and compete at the western Canadians in Regina next week.” stated the somewhat dejected but determined boxer from Edmonton’s Main Event.
In the Main Event of the evening, Devin Retti, a rising star from the host club touched em up with Johnny Mountain of Lac La Biche. Retti looking poised and relaxed well beyond his years took control early in the contest scoring with razor sharp accuracy and showed lightning fast reflexes while executing on the counter attack.
As it is no secret that Jonny Mountain is tough, hits hard and is relentless in his pursuit, Retti had to stick to his his game plan utilising fluid lateral movement and precise combination punching just to keep off the ever pressing Mountain.
In the last round fatigue showed up to haunt the Slave Lake Dynamo and Retti continued to rack up the points while at the same time displaying his defensive prowess. As the final round closed in on the last 60 seconds, Mountain, seemed to suck up reserve tank of gas and battled back gallantly to steal the victory but it was too little, too late.
Retti came away with a unanimous 5-0 decision but Johnny Mountain came away with the Warrior of the Night Award for his courageous and warrior like style. It has not only earned him the award but the respect of his peers and opponents throughout the province.
In preliminary action the always entertaining Roxy Lam, of Teofista in Calgary outworked and out lasted Brett Enns of Calgary’s Dynomite club. Pablo Quinones, of the W.E. Knights in Edmonton used a stinging left jab to edge out Zack Meadows of Dynomitye. Also, Tim Friesen of Calgary Boxing faced Connor Busch of Teofista and Dave Belcher of Sweet Science met Veeko Potts from Dynomite.
