One on One with CPBC Cruiserweight Champion Jason ‘Friday the Thirteenth’ Douglas
The Boxing Examiner recently caught up with Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) Cruiserweight champion Jason ‘Friday the Thirteenth’ Douglas (10-4-0) of Kitchener, Ontario, to get the champ’s plans for 2012. In his most recent contest, Douglas defeated former Canadian Boxing Federation (CBF) champion Frank ‘The Hammer’ White of Sarnia, Ontario, to claim the vacant CPBC title. Unsurprisingly, a unification bout with current Canadian Boxing Federation (CBF) champion Ryan Henney sat atop Douglas’ list of “to do’s” for 2012.
The Boxing Examiner: Hello Jason, I understand you are looking for a specific fight in 2012. Is this true?
Jason Douglas: Yes my man. I’ve been the #1 contender for Ryan Henney’s Canadian (CBF) Cruiserweight Title for 8-9 months now, I think. I want to fight Henney.
TBE: You lost a close decision to Henney in Edmonton in April of last year. What are your thoughts on that fight?
JD: After reviewing the fight on television, I know that I deserved the decision in our first match. You could see it in everybody’s faces! The television sports analyst said “the fight seemed to be a battle in favor of Jason Douglas” and Ken Lakusta stated “Any judge can see Ryan Henney was hit with much harder blows tonight than Douglas was.” I would have won for sure if it wasn’t for that second point being taken away from me for that absolutely unintentional and totally mutual clash of heads. Despite the point deduction, the judges and television sports commentators still had me winning the fight.
TBE: Is this rivalry with Henney personal, or does he just have something you want?
JD: I don’t have any negative feelings toward Ryan Henney as a person. I respect him.
TBE: Would you be willing to face him in Edmonton again?
JD: Yes. I’ll fight him in Edmonton. I love that city and I have friends and family there that want to see the rematch.
TBE: Do you think you can get the benefit of the doubt from the judges in a rematch?
JD: When it comes to people and their judgments and agendas, you never really know; but I hope so.
TBE: If you can’t get a rematch what are your other options for 2012?
JD: I hear talk about different things, and I’m ready for whatever comes my way.
TBE: Is there anything else you’d like to say in closing?
JD: If Henney and his promoter have the integrity to give me the rematch I deserve, then please contact my trainer Billy Martin to work out the details. Thanks Boxing Examiner!
