Mandy Bujold came to Cape Breton to fight her way to a seventh national boxing title, but in the end it was doctors who gave her the championship.
The Kitchener boxer has won the gold medal at the Canadian amateur boxing championships by default, after her opponent Amanda Galle didn’t pass a medical test.
The win means Bujold will go to the world championships in Beijing, where she has a good chance of qualifying for the Summer Olympics in London.
Galle sustained a vicious left eye injury in her fight Thursday night against Melody Dube of Quebec. The next morning, sporting a badly swollen black eye, Galle was told she would not be allowed to fight for the title.
Bujold said she was looking forward to the much-anticipated fight for her title, but she’ll take the free pass to the world championships.
“Everybody was looking forward to this fight,” she said. “I was ready to perform, but this is out of my hands. There’s nothing I can do about it.” Read More
