  1. Mark Simmons says:

First of all, I want to say that I thought it was a great fight and Ariane is a true Champion, but I can’t argue with the decision at all.

The first round, I would even say that Mary should have in fact been up by a point and not Ariane. The second round, I would say that Ariane probably won by a point and the third round was clearly that of Mary Spencer’s landing numerous clean punches. I could easily see her going ahead by several points.

In the last round, Mary did what every top amateur should do with a significant lead and it is to move and have tight defense. So, in terms of aggression, sure Ariane was more aggressive in the last round, but she had to be and when you open up with punches, you also leave yourself open and Mary was able to expose that by landing scoring blows.

Ariane is a great fighter and I hope for her benefit and all her fans that there will be a way for her to compete in this years Olympics with another country, because she absolutely deserves to be there, but in the same respect, if the Cuban team on the mens side were to enter 2 fighters in every weight division, they probably would be getting double the medals.

I’m sure there are many countries out there that would take a World Champion like Ariane Fortin and allow her to compete for their country, I just don’t think there is enough time to go through the citizenship process.

    We shall see…

  2. I have to strongly disagree with you, Mr. Simmons. Fortin won at least three of the four rounds and the third round was very close, too close to warrant Spencer jumping out to such a large points lead. You seem to be ignoring the counter lefts Ariane landed when Spencer was on the attack, as well as the four or five thumping body shots that made Spencer very uncomfortable towards the end of the round. The scoring of the contest was way off. The judges scored the second and fourth rounds even, when clearly Fortin landed more effective punches. For Spencer to win by such a large margin simply does not accurately reflect the action in the ring.
