Marcel “Little Magic” Maillet Wins Big in Halifax, NS

Marcel “Little Magic” Maillet (0-2-0) of Moncton’s Last Round Boxer won his four round, middleweight bout over Ryan Burgess (debut) of Truro, Nova Scotia, at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Centre Saturday night via a unanimous decision. The event was hosted by Caveman Promotions. Maillet fought relentlessly against a game opponent, landing frequently throughout the fight. Burgess was in trouble on several occasions – in three of the four rounds – in what was likely the fight of the night. The judges scored the fight 40-36, 40-36, 39-37.

“Stormin” Norman Peters (1-7-0) of Last Round Boxer lost by second round knockout to Stephane Landry (1-1-0) of Quebec via Halifax, in a cruiserweight match-up. Peters took the early lead, out boxing the rugged Landry in the first round with an effective left jab and some strong combinations, which dazed Landry. Peters took command again early in round two and it appeared Landry was headed for defeat. Several punches found their mark on the back of Peters head in close quarters before he took a tremendous right cross and was unable to beat the count.

In other action, Kyle McNeil (1-0-0) of Dartmouth, NS, defeated Gerard Audate (0-3-1) of Montreal, in their super featherweight bout via four round unanimous decision. This was an action-packed bout from beginning to end. McNeil finished stronger and was awarded a well deserved decision. McNeil’s record improves to 2-0 with 1 KO, while Audate falls to 0-4-1.

In his pro debut, Craig Hillier, a light heavyweight fighting out of Halifax, won by first round knockout over Jeff Black (0-1-0) of Halifax. Black was the aggressor in the early going, fighting Hillier on the inside. The 6’4” Hillier, however, found the range and delivered a devastating right cross, knocking Black out for the ten count. With the loss, Black’s record falls to 0-2-0.

In the Main Event Tyson Cave (15-2-0) of Halifax, won his eight round super bantamweight bout over Saturnino Nava of Mexico by unanimous decision in a classic fight that had fans on the edge of their seats throughout. Cave finished strong in every round, while Nava continued to pursue his illusive opponent, refusing to give any ground. The scoring of the bout was 80-72, 80-72, 80-72, all in favour of Tyson Cave. Cave is tentatively scheduled to fight Jovanny Soto (32-12-1) of Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, for the WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight title on March 24, 2012, at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Centre. The bout still requires the approval of the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority. Marcel “Little Magic” Maillet will likely fight on this card as well.

Light welterweight Jamie “TnT’ Taylor (1-2-0) of Last Round Boxer will be looking to even out his record when he takes on Ryan Ines (0-1-0) in Edmonton, Alberta, in February. Last Round Boxer light heavyweight Alexander (Sandy) Robb (7-0-1), originally from Scotland, will likely make his Canadian debut on March 26 in Halifax. Robb’s last fight was a highly disputed draw against Fafa Alex of Germany at the Sportpark in Cologne, Germany, on July 19th, 2011.
