The World Boxing Association was pleased to announce today that its WBA”KO to Drugs Campaign” was coming to Ancaster, Ontario, Canada in conjunction with STEELTOWN BOXING CLUB. The boxing show is scheduled for March 10th, 2012 and the WBA KO Drugs Campaign/ STEELTOWN BOXING CLUB boxing show is dedicated in memory of Robbie Wilcox with the proceeds raised going to the childhood Cancer Camp “Camp Trillium”. The Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre offers and promotes recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together. It provides an environment that normalizes relationships and experiences, helping children and their families in the healing process and enhancing their quality of life.
The WBA “KO to Drugs Campaign” was introduced by the President of the WBA, Dr. Gilberto Mendoza, in 1989, at the World Boxing Association Convention which took place in Margarita Island, Venezuela. Other locations through the years have included Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica.
The mission of the WBA “KO to Drugs Campaign” is to raise awareness within youths in relation to the danger to themselves and to society as a whole in the use of drugs, and drug addiction, and encourages youths to keep their bodies and minds clean and drug-free. WBA director George Martinez stated “the WBA will spare no effort to promulgate this message, especially in our sport of boxing. Thus far we have concentrated mainly in the pro ranks of the sport, but on March 10th, 2012 we are excited to bring our campaign, in new ground breaking fashion, to Ancaster, Ontario, Canada at the state of the art Ancaster Fairgrounds Merritton Hall with the help of STEELTOWN BOXING CLUB managed by Robert Wilcox, Ontario Boxing Head Coach. We invite everybody in the boxing community to support our effort and join us in this very important task and we thank Robert Wilcox and Jensen Strauss Boxing Limitee (Michael Schmidt, agent) in assisting us in making this a memorable event”.
Robert Wilcox of STEELTOWN BOXING CLUB boxing stated that “it was an honor to be selected by the WBA to hold this groundbreaking amateur event for a worthy cause and in memory of our son Robbie Wilcox and it is a great opportunity for everyone in the boxing community to come together in a positive manner”. Scheduled to appear at the event are a number of WBA Directors and the President of the WBA, Dr. Gilberto Mendoza. As well former Kitchener native and World Champion Donny “Golden Boy” Lalonde is scheduled to appear along with other celebrity attendees. More information is to follow.
