Vargas-Plaitis for NCC Welterweight Crown
By: GM Ross
Undefeated welterweight prospect Samuel Vargas (8-0-1) of Mississauga, Ontario, gets another crack at national laurels on Saturday, Feberuary 11, when he takes on Manolis Plaitis (17-1-1) of Montreal, Quebec, at Mississauga’s Hersey Centre for the vacant National Championship Committee (NCC) welterweight title. The Vargas-Plaitis matchup represents the second national title appearance for each man. About a year ago, Vargas fought a slashing ten round draw with then Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) welterweight champion Tebor Brosch (6-3-4) for the vacant NABA Canada welterweight title. Plaitis fought for, and won, the NCC light welterweight title in a fight with Bakary Sako (7-5-3) in 2008.
Adding intrigue to the event is a common opponent: Tebor Brosch. “The Mighty” Tebor owns draws with both Vargas and Plaitis, who he fought he Mississauga and Montreal, respectively. Brosch was stripped of his CPBC welterweight crown in 2011 for violating the organization’s boycott of NABA Canada competition. He was never dethroned by an opponent. Hopfeully Brosch’s undefeated status as Canadian champion places him high atop the list of potential contenders for the winner of Vargas-Plaitis. The Vargas-Plaitis show is being co-promoted by Hennessey Canada and United Promotions, so expect a top notch evening of sport, featuring some of Ontario’s top pugilistic prospects!
