Vargas and Plaitis title fight should NOT happen. The welterweight max is 147. Vargas over by 6 # and Plaitis over by 5 makes them light middleweights. There has to be discipline in this great sport. If they don’t make weight, it should be a NON Title fight. No special provisions. They are both very good fighters, but if they find it to much to make weight, it’s time to move up?.
@Darren Hauck. I asked the same question on another website and was told that the accepted weight for the title was 147 pounds THE DAY BEFORE the fight. Both fighters made that weight easily yesterday. The Ontario Commission is the only organisation that requires a weigh in on fight day, which is a non-sense in my opinion. The contract stipulated that both fighters could not exceed 154, the DAY OF THE FIGHT.
The NCC rules state the the fighters must make the weight limit between 6 and 30 hours before the scheduled fight, which they did. The only reason they weighed in on the day of the fight as well is because the Ontario Athletic Commission requires same day weigh in…
This is BS. @ Durell, when has the ontario commission ever extended this favor? They always have their fighters weigh in the day of the fight. Sure NCC rules, are just that, however in Ontario it is the day of the fight and that is how it has been. Should it be changed sure, but I agree with Derrick on this one, it should not be a title fight. If they wanted to go with a weigh in the day of the fight then should have fought in QC. Sham and BS I call, bending of the rules, because although it meets NCC rules, it doesn’t meet the Ontario rules of a Welterweight fight. As well if you are saying that because they weighted in the day before this is ok for the NCC, according to the current Ontario rules this is not. So does the NCC trump the Ontario Athletic Commission?
Shady either way you look at it.
They did weigh in the day of the fight! All parties agreed to it, they satisfied the NCC rules by making the weight limit the day before and the Ontario Athletic commission allows day before weigh ins, it’s been done before and it will be done again but they insist on a day of the fight weigh in too to ensure the fighters only gain a certain percentage of their body weight back!
@ Durell, you are right they did weigh in the day of the fight, and as the Boxing Examiner said the unoffical weigh ins were the day before. I agree that Ontario has it backwards to everyone else, but as long as they are going to fight in Ontario they should have to weight in the day of the fight until the rules are changed.
