February 17, 1915, Vancouver, BC – In a match up of two BC fighters, Joe Bayley re-claimed the Canadian Lightweight title by out-pointing Charlie Burns over 20 rounds at Fraser Mills. In all, Bayley fought for the Canadian Lightweight Championship 10 times, winning 6, losing only once and coming away with 3 draws!
February 20, 1935, Vancouver, BC – Welterweight Gordon Wallace defended his Canadian Welterweight Championship with a 12 round decision at the Arena in Vancouver. The Stoughton, Saskatchewan native out-pointed Edmonton’s Jordan Sonny James to keep the title.
February 9, 1948, Toronto, ON – Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto was the host of the Canadian Lightweight Championship. Hometown hero Arthur King took on Montreal’s Danny Webb to claim the Canadian belt for the first time, stopping Webb in the 8th round.
February 20, 1962, Quebec City, QC – Canadian Bantamweight Champion Marcel Gendron of Quebec City, moved up in weight to capture the Canadian Featherweight Championship with a 12 round decision over Sorel, QC’s Andre Milette. Milette had beaten Gendron twice, but couldn’t beat him for the Canadian title.
February 11, 1984, Winnipeg, MB – Future WBC World Champion Donny Lalonde defended his Canadian Light Heavyweight Championship over Toronto’s Jimmy Gradson in his hometown of Winnipeg. Donny would parlay his Canadian national title into international opportunities in just over a year when he won the North American Boxing Federation title which led to his WBC World Championship.
February 6, 2010, Montreal, QC – Hometown hero David Lemieux won the Canadian Super Middleweight Championship over a game and very tough Jason Naugler of Halifax. Of significance is the fact that this was the one and only time Lemieux has gone the distance until he fought former World Champion Joachim Alcine this past December.
February 11, 2012, Mississauga, ON – Samuel Vargas stops Manolis Plaitis at 2:49 of round 1 to claim the vacant Canadian Welterweight Championship. Vargas, an exciting transplanted Colombian, was honored to win the Canadian Championship, and looks to this as a stepping stone to international success, as others before him have done.

I like the history article. I wonder who comes up next month.
Canada has a rich boxing history, and it should be flaunted. Good Job, guys! I look forward to next month’s history lesson.
