In the early ‘80’s, the amateur boxing boom in Ontario was in full swing, so to further accommodate the influx of budding boxers, the Roddy MacDonald Junior Development Tournament was born. Originally named after the Canadian Amateur middleweight champion Roddy MacDonald, whose family business helped sponsor and promote the boxing tournament. Boxing Ontario then allowed clubs to bid on and host the event. From 1983 to 1991 the tournament was exclusively ran by the Bramalea Boxing Club who had stepped up to take over the then dying tournament. So in 1992 when the president, Peter Sjouwerman and the executive board of the Bramalea Boxing Club, decided to expand the format and honor the city by changing its name to the Brampton Cup, things really took off. Brampton Cup expanded to host clubs from all across Canada and the United States and grew to become the largest independently held boxing tournament in North America hosting up to 350 men, women, boys and girls in its “hay days” in the ‘90’s. It was recognized as the most accommodating boxing event for developing amateur athletes as they competed in 2 rings simultaneously, averaging 25 bouts or more per ring for 4 action packed sessions over the 3 day period. The Brampton Cup gained the reputation of being run in a professional manner with a hectic, yet organized atmosphere, truly a reasonable facsimile of what boxers would have to endure at the elite levels, preparing all its participants for their future endeavors in the sport. The event is held at the end of January or the beginning of February kicking off the year for every boxing club in Ontario. Read More
