Last night at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York Amanda Serrano (5-0-1, 3KO’s) of Brooklyn, New York won a controversial 6 round 59-54, 58-56 and 58-56 unanimous decision against Montreal’s Lucia Larcinese (4-5). To many in attendance the judge’s scores did not accurately reflect the fight’s action. This sentiment was shared by some in press row as well as some of the ringside officials and more importantly the fans in attendance.

In the opening round the southpaw Serrano came out very strong taking the fight straight to Larcinese catching her with flush power shots right on the chin however Larcinese took the punches well and did not wilt under the aggressive pressure of Serrano. Instead, Larcinese kept to her game plan of boxing and counter punching Serrano.
a
Much of the same happened in the second round as Serrano continued to walk Larcinese down landing bombs on the Montreal fighter’s chin but could not drop her. Serrano’s three knockouts is testament to the punching power she possesses however Larcinese proved that she has a great chin. Throughout the first two rounds Larcinese was able to land some punches but only one or two at a time and not very effectively.

Serrano looked frustrated near the end of the third round as she continued her straight forward aggressive approach however she was starting to run into an effective jab from Larcinese as well as straight right hands. Serrano’s forward aggressiveness was no longer effective by the mid point of the round and momentum seemed to be turning to Larcinese’s favour. At this point in the bout Larcinese had slight swelling under her left eye and swelling was visible under both of Serrano’s eyes.
a
In round four Serrano came out strong looking like she had in the first two rounds however by the mid way point Larcinese had her back on the end of her jab, straight right hands and left hooks and was outboxing Serrano who was just coming forward without any head movement and getting caught by clean effective punches by Larcinese on the outside. Serrano’s forward aggressiveness was no longer effective at this point in the bout however she was able to land some punches of her own but only one or two at a time.

a
Rounds five and six saw Larcinese clearly outbox the Brooklyn boxer who continued to just walk forward into clean punches but did not seem to have an answer to Larcinese boxing skills. Serrano’s face was red and she looked very tired and frustrated at this point in the bout. As the final bell sounded Larcinese had her hands raised high in celebration feeling she clearly did enough to win the fight while Serrano looked tired and relieved that the fight was finally over.

As the judges decision was announced a chorus of boos echoed from the audience as well as cries for a rematch. After the fight I took a survey of some journalists on press row, some ringside officials and fans in the casino who watched the match and many stated that they felt Larcinese did at least enough to earn a draw in the New York girl’s home State.

Amanda Serrano has to come down to K2 boxing and learn how to utilize a boxing strategy along with that aggressive nature.
