Sonsona KO’ed in Puerto Rico!

Tonight at the “Double Assault” PPV at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. knocked out previously undefeated former world champion Marvin Sonsona with a thunderous body shot to the liver in the fourth round to claim the WBO Super Bantamweight Championship.  The official time of the stoppage was 2:01.

Marvin wasn’t so Marvelous tonight as he travelled into hostile territory and was frustrated by a very determined Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

In the opening round both fighters felt each other out however Sonsona was able to land a hard straight left to the body and 2 hard lefts to the head.  Vazquez Jr seems to be looking for the right distance to attack.

In the second round Vazquez landed a hard straight right to the head of Sonsona.  Marvin was spending too much time with his back in the ropes and was unable to get punching leverage from there.  Marvin had a slight cut and swelling around his left eye from Vazquez’s right hands.  During the round Vazquez was warned to watch his elbows.

Round three saw both fighters cautioned early for clashes of heads in close. Vazquez was rubbing the top of his head in Marvin’s face. As the round progressed Vazquez was able to land a straight right and left hook while Marvin was on the ropes.  Sonsona was warned for pushing Vazquez off.

In the fourth round Sonsona was showing signs of frustration early however Vazquez was cautioned by referee Luis Pabon for holding.  Vazquez was still able to land a left hook to the head with Marvin on the ropes again.  Sonsona attempted to land his left uppercut but fell short.  Vazquez Jr landed a straight right that snapped Marvin’s head back and forced him to raise his hands too high allowing Vazquez to get great leverage on a devastating left hook to the liver.  Marvin threw a left uppercut as he slumped to the canvas where he takes the full 10 count.

The referee for the fight was Luis Pabon of Puerto Rico and the judges were Mike Pernik, Carlos Colon, and Tom Miller.
