a

a

In the main event NABF Super Middleweight champion Sebastien “Double Trouble” Demers (31-2, 11 KO’s) of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec earned a hard fought and well deserved victory over three time WBA Middleweight World champion William Joppy(39-6-1, 30 KO’s) of New Jersey by a 97-93, 97-93 and 95-95 majority decision.

a

a

In a close opening round both fighters used their jabs to create openings for combinations to the head and body however neither man showed a significant advantage in the round.  A small cut opened on the corner of Demers’ left eye early in the second round.  Blood flowed into Demer’s eye that caused him to wipe at it occasionally throughout the round.  Demers continued to press forward landing a big overhand right that stunned Joppy near the end of the round.

a

Demers continued to pressure Joppy in the middle rounds of the fight as he frequently landed combinations to the head and body on the former World Champion.  Even though Joppy was not landing as frequently his punches seemed to be having a greater effect as the cut on Demers’ eye continued to bleed profusely and grow in size.  In addition, Demers’ right eye was rapidly swelling shut as the seventh round concluded.

a

a

Joppy looked like the fresher fighter going into the last three rounds of the bout but a determined Demers continued to press forward scoring his combinations well however Joppy seemed unfazed by the onslaught and continued to bust up the face of the Quebec based fighter.  It was Demers’ high punch output and connect rate mixed with heart and determination that earned him the hard fought victory.

After the bout Joppy officially announced his retirement to the crowd and in a show of great sportsmanship and class he thanked the Montreal crowd for their support.  Joppy will go down in history as one of the greats.

a

a

Quebec champion Nicholson Poulard (14-3, 6 KO’s) of Laval, Quebec defeated former Canadian champion Larry “Razor” Sharpe (24-8-1, 12 KO’s) of Pine Falls, Manitoba by a 79-72, 79-72 and 78-75 unanimous decision.

a

a

In the opening seconds of round one Sharpe was dropped by a big right hand.  Sharpe was easily able to beat the count and attempted to mount a comeback to stay in the round.  Round two saw the southpaw Sharpe land some good body shots but they did not seem to affect Poulard.  Poulard responded with several big right hands that Sharpe seemed unfazed by.  In the third round Poulard was just looking for the one punch knockout while the crafty veteran Sharpe seemed to out hustle him.

a

a

Larry Sharpe came on strong in the fourth round landing body shots however the obviously larger Poulard seemed unfazed and continued trying to land only one punch at a time.  With Poulard not throwing many punches Sharpe seemed to easily out hustled him on the inside throughout the fifth round.  Poulard finally started coming forward and attempted to put together some combinations mid way through the sixth round as he snapped Sharpe’s head back with big right hands.

a

a

A  cut opened over Pouland’s left eye early in the seventh round caused by an accidental clash of heads.  Poulard was able to score a nice left hook, right hand combination to Sharpe’s head however moments later during a clinch the referee called for a break where Poulard threw a blatant late right hand catching Sharpe in the eye.  There was a break in the action for several minutes to allow Sharpe the opportunity to regroup.  After the late punch Sharpe’s left eye had significant bruising and swelling.  Near the end of the round Sharpe snapped Poulard’s head back with a big right hand.  Poulard came out with more urgency in the eighth round throwing more punches and taking the vital last round.  A cut opened high up on the right part of Sharpe’s forhead caused by an accidental clash of heads.

a

a

a

In a Lightweight bout Logan McGuinness (10-0, 4 KO’s) of Orangeville, Ontario defeated a very tough Pedro Navarrete of Mexico (24-7-3, 13 KO’s) by a 79-74, 77-75 and 77-75 unanimous decision.

a

a

The opening round was very close and technical as both fighters came out trying to establish their jabs with neither man seeming to gain the advantage.  Both fighters came out in the second round more aggressively landing effective punches on the inside however it seemed that Navarrete had a slight edge as he was able to land the cleaner, more effective punches.  McGuinness bounced right back in the third round using good defence and lateral movement which made Navarrete miss allowing McGuinness the chance to counter with big right hands to the Mexican’s head.

a

a

In round four both fighters traded combinations however mid way through the Navarrete came on with some big combinations to the head and body that McGuinness had no answers for.  McGuinness came back strong in the fifth round however controlling most of the round with effective boxing.  Navarrete came on strong near the end of the round trying to steal it.  McGuinness’s body work seemed to pay dividends as Navarrete seemed to slow down allowing McGuinness to step up the pressure and land big right hands and left hooks that drove the Mexican backwards.

a

a

McGuinness continued where he left off controlling the pace and choosing his spots however part way through the round the referee stopped the action to fix the tape on Navarrete’s glove and that seemed to hinder McGuinness more than help him.  In the final both fighters came out very aggressively letting their hands fly furriously.  Most of the round was fought in close quarters with boths fighters leaving it all in the ring.

Vargas Dominates Leonard!

a

a

The opening contest was a six round Welterweight fight that saw Samuel Vargas (2-0, 1 KO) of Mississagua, Ontario defeat Pascal Leonard (2-2) of Saint-Jerome, Quebec by a 60-54, 60-54 and 60-52 unanimous decision.

a

a

Vargas came out strong going right after his opponent using his jab effectively which created openings for solid combinations to the head and body of Leonard.  Leonard was unable to fire back effectively and instead back peddled and held on whenever possible receiving a warning by the referee in round one.  In the second round Vargas opened a large cut over Leonard’s left eye as he continued to put the pressure on the Quebec based fighter hurting him to the body with left hooks.  Much of the same action continued throughout the rest of the fight as Vargas continued to systematically breaking down Leonard with left hooks to the body and right hands to the head.  Blood continued to flow down Leonard’s face from the cut over his eye as he just continued walking backwards away from Vargas only occasionally standing his ground to throw a punch.
