TBE: So Logan tell me how is training going so far and can you tell me a little bit about your training regiment?
a
Logan: Training is going great! I had just fought on July 10th and I originally thought Buzz and I were fighting on August 14th at the Bell Centre in Montréal but when that didn’t happen I went to light training for a week to give my mind a break because I didn’t want to burn out and since then we have been training hard and sparring three days a week Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I work with my strength and conditioning coach Ryan Sinclair here in Orangeville. I’ve been running 10 to 15 km each day 6 days a week and have been sparring with a lot of guys who are movers because typically Buzz has been a mover in the past so we have been working a lot on cutting off the ring and I won’t have a problem the 25th. TBE: So Buzz how is training going so far for this fight?
a
Buzz: Everything is going well for this fight. We were supposed to fight August 14th, two weeks ago, we were training hard for that and we were ready and then about three weeks before the fight we got a call from Logan’s manager saying the fight has been postponed until September so we weaned off for a couple weeks with some light training and then got back into it hard so we had a long camp and training has been going really well with lots of good sparring and I feel great. (April 8th, 2010) Tonight at the Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto the 25th annual Shaw Festival boxing event took place. As usual the black tie event was sold out and attended by boxing dignitaries such as Shawn O’Sullivan, Egerton Marcus, Chris Johnson and World Champion Steve Molitor.
a
The main event of the evening was for the WBA George Bernard Shaw Memorial Cup and saw Ontario Lightweight champion Buzz Grant, now 9-3, 2 KO’s of Orangeville defeat World Military champion Michael Kelly, now 8-1, 2 KO’s of Belfast, Ireland by a 99-91, 100-90 and 98-92 unanimous decision. Read More
The story from the weigh-in at the Royal York Hotel is that Logan McGuinness’ fight has been scratched from the card. After promoters and match makers hustled to find McGuinness a short notice replacement a rematch was set with tough Pedro Navarrete of Mexico. McGuinness and Navarette engaged in a classic battle of wills in Montreal this past March 6th in which McGuinness came away with the victory by a close decision.
Navarette is enroute to Toronto from Mexico but once the notoriously tough Ontario Athletic Commissioner Ken Hayashi caught wind of the fighter travelling on fight day the bout was soon cancelled!
Orangeville’s Buzz Grant (135lbs) will now fight the 10 round Main Event against Ireland’s Michael Kelly (134.8lbs.) and Tyson Cave (123.8lbs) of Halifax will box another Irishmen Willie Casey (123.6lbs) in the 8 round co-feature. Organizers are also working on a 4 round exhibition bout between Tebor Brosch and Victor Lupo both of Mississauga.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with promoter Don MacDonald of United Boxing Promotions in regards to the January 16th card and the issues surrounding it.
a
I appreciate you taking the time to talk to us; I know it is probably pretty hectic right now.
No, no your different than the average media you do so much more I should be thanking you for everything you do for boxing in Ontario without guys like you in the corner it makes it that much more difficult.
a
How is the card shaping up for the 16th?
There are some changes, Logan McGuinness pulled out! The reason why he pulled out is that he has an injured hand and I have absolutely no reason to doubt that in any way, shape or form. The people that handle him have been very professional to the t and then some. But lo and behold there’s Scottie Paul willing to take a fight on short notice and hop in the ring and wants to do that heavy battle with Harrison again.
a
That’ll be a rematch! They met in their debuts.
Yeah, Jim and I did the first fight and I was honestly blown away by that fight and I thought to myself shit that’s a fight that I want to see back in the ring again. The only thing I’m disappointed at is that I’m only giving Scottie 2 weeks notice but he’s a true warrior and Ron’s a true professional and he (Scottie) always stays in shape so I think that fight is going to be fantastic fight. I believe that this may just be the start of another couple of fights between these two over the next couple of years. I don’t think it’s going to be decided after January 16th that’s for sure.
This card was originally suppose to be headlined by the much talked about Buzz Grant and Logan McGuinness fight, can you tell us what happened to that fight from your perspective
Well, absolutely. You know I think the biggest problem in boxing is communication and you know originally Bryon (Mackie) and I were having lunch up in Orangeville talking about the fight and Buzz Grant joined us. We asked him what fight he wanted and he was screaming to the high heavens for Logan Cotton McGuinness and we went over the weight issue. 135 pounds was going to be the weight we were going to try to make it a Canadian title fight, but there were no guarantees about a title because of the number of fights and rounds that Logan had at that time, since then he’s fought a couple of times. Grant Defeats Slezsak
In an action packed main event Buzz Grant (7-3, 4KO’s) of Orangeville earned a 39-37, 39-36 and 38-36 unanimous decision victory over short notice opponent Dan Slezsak (0-3) of Brantford. Grant started out strong with great movement and combinations utilizing his jab however Slezsak was able to come on strong at the end of the round. In the second round Grant came out strong but was caught by a right hand that stunned him and he was knocked off balance and eventually was dropped. The knock down was a wake up call for Buzz because he came right back after an initial flurry by Slezsak and kept the pressure on in the second half of the round.
In the third and fourth rounds Slezsak tried to land one punch bombs but was unsuccessful. Grant utilized a relentless body attack and short uppercuts and had Slezsak hurt and backing up for the remainder of the fight. With the victory Grant improves to 8-3, 4KO’s while Dan Sleszak drops to 0-4. It should be noted that Dan Slezsak deserves a lot of credit for showing courage and determination giving Grant all he could handle over the 4 rounds. Read More
Tyson Cave: I’m currently 9-0, fight at 122lbs and am the Canadian Super Bantamweight champion. Currently the most hated and talked about in Canada soon to be the most hated in the world probably because I’m going to the top.
TBE: And from what I understand you have quit a bit of amateur background, can you tell us about that as well?
TC: I’m 4 time Canadian champion. I had about a hundred or something amateur fights and fought very well. I went to the world championships. I boxed against the best, beat some of the best and lost against some of the best. Boxing is pretty much my life. Read More
