United Promotions Card Heating Up!!

Posted by Durell Wambolt on May 13, 2010 at 09:35 am

In what started of as a very quiet promotion is quickly heating up!  This Saturday, May 15th Andrew Singh Kooner (10-2 4KO’s) of Mississauga, Ontario will challenge Jose Silveira (10-2 4KO’s) of Mexico for the vacant NABA Bantamweight Title.  With identical records there isn’t much separating the 2, only the fact that Silveira has fought 6 more rounds as a professional, 63 to Kooner’s 57.

What has already set the 2 apart is the trash talking.  Kooner opts to do his talking in the ring while Silveira’s camp has already started outside of it. Silveira’s manager, Marco Rivera stated in a recent press release that Kooner, a Sikh Canadian, will not be able to compete with his fighter.  “How can a Canadian Sikh even think that they can be on the same level playing field as us?” Rivera said. “Now if we were playing hockey or that other game cricket, then yes, but not boxing. Boxing is our (Mexico) national sport” Rivera went on to say that his fighter will knockout Kooner on Saturday night. Read More

Sonsona and Hernandez Battle to a Split Draw!

Sonsona lands a right hook

In the Main Event of the evening Philipino sensation “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KO’s) took on WBO Junior Bantamweight #1 contender Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez (22-7-1, 11 KO’s) of Mexico in what was to be Sonsona’s first scheduled defence of his WBO Junior Bantamweight championship however Sonsona was unable to make the 115lbs weight limit and lost his title on the scale.  If Hernandez won the bout he would have become the new world champion however this was not the case tonight.

Both fighters gave their all as Sonsona controlled the first half of the fight however Hernandez turned the tables in the second half and took the fight to the “Marvelous One” who seemed to fade down the stretch.  After the final bell both fighters raised their arms believing they had won the fight however the judge’s scored the bout 115-113 for Sonsona, 115-113 for Hernandez and 114-114 even as the fight was declared a split draw!

Kielsa and Montiy Ruled a No Contest!

The final undercard bout of the evening featured Canadian Heavyweight champion Greg Kielsa (10-0, 5 KO’s) of Brampton who took on Kevin Montiy (17-6-1, 13 KO’s) of Michigan.

Both fighters started cautiously throwing one punch at a time with neither landing any significant combinations during the opening round.

A clash of heads opened a cut over Montiy’s left eye half way through the second round forcing the bout to a halt on advice of the ring doctor at 1:51.   The bout was ruled a no contest.  Many felt the cut was not large or significant enough to warrant the early stoppage. Read More
