On Saturday May 15, 2010 at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ontario United Promotions held six action packed fights culminating with the main event that saw Mexican Jose Silveira upset the hometown fighter Andrew Kooner, capturing the vacant N.A.B.A. Bantamweight championship by a four round 39-37, 39-37 & 38-38 technical decision.  The fight was halted after four rounds by the ring doctor due to a severe cut that started on Kooner’s forehead and ran vertically down between his eyes.  The cut was caused by an accidental clash of heads.

a

It was déjà vu for Kooner as he came out in the opening round looking sluggish which might have been caused by a long lay off; having only fought six ½ rounds since September 2008.  Kooner’s June 2009, fight in the UK was halted after 0:59 seconds of the first round due to cuts sustained by accidental clashes of heads.  In addition, nerves could have played a part as well due to the large partisan crowd who turned out to support him. Jorge Banos: Baby Steps for a Bigger Run!

This coming Saturday, May 15th at the Powerade Center in Brampton Ontario, Jorge Banos and Harrison King-Mcbain will face off for the second time since their 2008 fight ending in a majority draw. The previous fight provided a highly entertaining main event for the people in attendance, and the second one should deliver the same, especially since the original six rounder has now added two more. Professional boxing in Ontario has, in more recent years, begun to gather momentum attempting to replicate the growing popularity and talent pool that our neighbors to the east in Quebec have developed. And, of course, Ontario has found numerous talented fighters hoping to put their name on the map. For Jorge Banos, the Ontario lightweight division is the particular point of the map he wishes to take aim.  Read More

United Promotions Card Heating Up!!

Posted by Durell Wambolt on May 13, 2010 at 09:35 am

In what started of as a very quiet promotion is quickly heating up!  This Saturday, May 15th Andrew Singh Kooner (10-2 4KO’s) of Mississauga, Ontario will challenge Jose Silveira (10-2 4KO’s) of Mexico for the vacant NABA Bantamweight Title.  With identical records there isn’t much separating the 2, only the fact that Silveira has fought 6 more rounds as a professional, 63 to Kooner’s 57.

a

What has already set the 2 apart is the trash talking.  Kooner opts to do his talking in the ring while Silveira’s camp has already started outside of it. Silveira’s manager, Marco Rivera stated in a recent press release that Kooner, a Sikh Canadian, will not be able to compete with his fighter.  “How can a Canadian Sikh even think that they can be on the same level playing field as us?” Rivera said. “Now if we were playing hockey or that other game cricket, then yes, but not boxing. Boxing is our (Mexico) national sport” Rivera went on to say that his fighter will knockout Kooner on Saturday night. Read More

Lupo and Jimenez Fight to a Draw

a

a

a

Last night a capacity crowd at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, witnessed an action packed night of knock outs at United Boxing Promotions first card of 2010 entitled Undisputed.  The Main Event of the night saw WBA Fedecentro Light Middleweight champion and Canadian Welterweight champion Victor Lupo (17-1-2, 9KO’s) earn an eight round 75-76, 77-75, 76-76 split draw with Mexico’s Ulises Jimenez (16-12, 12KO’s).

a

Lupo was the aggressor throughout the fight however in the first round he was caught by a right uppercut as he was leaning in and dropped to the canvass in a flash knockdown.  Jimenez was an awkward fighter and his strategy throughout the fight consisted of circling the perimeter of the ring and only punching when he was forced to.  In addition, Jimenez would attempt to lure Lupo into the right uppercut but was seldom successful.  However, when Jimenez did throw punches he would land the harder more effective blows.  Read More
