TBE: Rumble @ Rama XI looks like a blockbuster with 3 title fights! You executed exactly what you said you would, positioning Steve Molitor for another shot at the world championship.

AT: It hasn’t come easy! Negotiating with Branco Milenkovic from Branco Productions in South Africa was the most difficult undertaking I’ve had to endure in my time in boxing. He is a man that has won purse bids, the last 6 purse bids accumulatively with Top Rank Boxing, Golden Boy and Don King and come out successfully so it was a daunting task going in. I think the only reason that I had the chance to succeed is that I’ve had a personal relationship with him. I met him in South Africa when he was starting out when we were there for the Vabaza fight that allowed me to have a discussion where dollars traded hands to allow Molitor to come here. Read More

Sonsona and Hernandez Battle to a Split Draw!

In the Main Event of the evening Philipino sensation “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KO’s) took on WBO Junior Bantamweight #1 contender Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez (22-7-1, 11 KO’s) of Mexico in what was to be Sonsona’s first scheduled defence of his WBO Junior Bantamweight championship however Sonsona was unable to make the 115lbs weight limit and lost his title on the scale. If Hernandez won the bout he would have become the new world champion however this was not the case tonight.
Both fighters gave their all as Sonsona controlled the first half of the fight however Hernandez turned the tables in the second half and took the fight to the “Marvelous One” who seemed to fade down the stretch. After the final bell both fighters raised their arms believing they had won the fight however the judge’s scored the bout 115-113 for Sonsona, 115-113 for Hernandez and 114-114 even as the fight was declared a split draw!

The Main Event of the evening was for the WBO Jr. Bantamweight Championship of the world between the reigning champion from Puerto Rico, Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) and his 19 year old challenger from the Philippines “Marvellous” Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s).
Both fighters are known as big punchers and most expected a war and thats exactly what they got for twelve full rounds. The fight was full of non stop, back and forth action. Both fighters tested each others chin throughout the bout and both showed a lot of heart and gave the Rama crowd, made up of a large contingent of Filipinos, their monies worth.

The judges scores were unanimous with Ted Gimza scoring the bout 116-109, Kelly Zolnierczyk 115-110 and Harry Davis 114-111. Filipino Upstart Slugger and WBO Jr. Bantamweight Champ Vow to Wage War at Rumble at Rama IX!
TORONTO, ON (Wednesday, September 2, 2009) – WBO Junior Bantamweight Champion Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) and his opponent, budding superstar “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s), met for the first time at the final pre-fight press conference in advance of their title clash that tops Rumble at Rama IX, set for Friday, September 4th, at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario.
While both fighters had little to say to the assembled media on Wednesday, they promised that the subdued press conference was just the calm before the storm.
“I know he is a strong, fast fighter, but I didn’t work this hard to become champion just to give my belt away,” said Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico’s Lopez who after four previous attempts at a world title, finally tasted boxing glory in his last fight, a 12 round unanimous decision over Pramuansak Posuwan for the vacant WBO 115 lb. title.
“I respect my opponent greatly, but with all his skills, it’s nothing I haven’t seen and dealt with before.”
For the 19 year-old Sonsona, Lopez poses easily the most daunting challenge of his young career.
“I know this fight will be a tough one, but I’ve trained hard, and am confident that if I stick to my game plan I’ll come home a champion,” said Sonsona, who hails from General Santos City, in the Philippines, the same hometown as international boxing superstar, and Pinoy icon, Manny Pacquiao.
