This past week a select few had a real boxing treat indeed as they were lucky enough to watch five time National Canadian amateur boxing champion, and Olympic gold medal hopeful, Mandy Bujold spar with five time world champion and current W.I.B.A and W.B.A. champion Lisa “Bad News” Brown. Both fighters have the pedigree to know the appropriate way to use these type of workout sessions and both enjoyed the experience so much that arrangements are being made to get together shortly in good old Kitchener for some “open to the public” sparring sessions.

At the post fight press conference for the Brown vs Julaton WBA championship at Casino Rama a few months ago I could not help but notice Olympic hopefuls Bujold ,Colin Fish and Mary Spencer in the crowd. They seemed to be really enjoying the experience. Two thoughts came to mind at the time. Firstly, that Mandy would, given her style, speed, and pedigree, give Lisa some great speed work in preparation for certain opponents we are looking at down the road. Secondly, as I watched Mandy, Colin and Mary beaming and enjoying the show was the thought that THEY NEED TO STAY FOCUSED MENTALLY AS DO THERE RESPECTIVE COACHES. Read More

In one of the greatest trilogies in Canadian amateur boxing history multi time World Champion Mary Spencer of Windsor, Ontario claimed the 75kg National Championship defeating reigning National and multi time World Champion Ariane Fortin from Quebec 11-10 on Wednesday night at the Box Offs held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On Thursday night the two met again and the bout ended in a 14-14 tie after four rounds however Spencer won via a 30-29 count back.
Fortin defeated Spencer last month at the Canadian National championships held in Quebec as both women stole the show fighting unquestionably the bout of the tournament there. This victory moves Spencer one step closer to her dream of winning an Olympic Gold medal for Canada at the 2012 Summer Games.
Congratulations to both women who prove just why women’s boxing deserves it rightful place at the 2012 Summer Games in London, UK.

This week the Canadian National Amateur champions will take place in St. Hyacinthe, QC. What makes the 2010 edition of the tournament significant this time around is that it marks the beginning of the quest to gain a spot on the 2012 Olympic team which is being held in London, UK. This also marks the first time that women’s boxing will be allowed in the Olympics however there is only going to be three weight divisions (48-51kg, 56-60kg and 69-75kg) which ups the ante even more for the women who want one of the limited spots on Team Canada in 2012.
