This message is to mr.rick mclean; Try to write positive things about our Canadian hard fighting boxers that go into other countries and bring back the win. Obviously you have never been inside those ropes. It is easy to sit on the outside and have your inexperienced opinion. You’re just being a prejudiced ass!! Ray Taylor.. Windsor Ontario Canada.

  5. Windsor boxer Gorges triumphs in Auburn Hills

Even his own fan base worried Andre Gorges had taken on too much when he accepted a fight against a far more experienced boxer for a North American Boxing Association welterweight title.

Despite moving up a weight class and performing for the first time over eight rounds, the gutsy 25-year-old from Border City Boxing Club won a split decision over Kronk’s Lanardo Tyner Saturday night in the main event at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

“My fans were saying it was going to be a blood bath,” Gorges said. “There were a lot of odds against me. It was a close, tough fight. The toughest I’ve had for sure.”

Gorges is now 10-1 as a pro while Tyner, a hard puncher with 16 knockouts on his resume, is 24-4-1.

“It was a great fight,” Border City coach Josh Canty said. “It was close but Gorges did win and deservedly so. He was the busier fighter. He landed some clean shots. We figured (Tyner) needed a KO in the last round and he came on really strong. It was a real war in that round.”

Gorges got caught up in the moment in that final round and went toe-to-toe with Tyner instead of sticking with a more technical plan to out box him.

“I lost that round bad,” he said. “But now I know I can take their punches at 147 pounds.”

Normally, Gorges goes into the ring as a 140-pound junior welterweight.

Defeating Tyner, who as a Kronk boxer was bascially fighting in his own hometown, has put Gorges on the map, according to Canty.

“It was a main event and we took a big chance,” Canty said. “It was a great step-up fight for Andre. He rose to the occasion and this puts him in the spotlight. Certainly an NABA championship is a great stepping stone.”

It was Gorges’ first fight in 10 months because finding willing opponents is proving to be a tall order.

“There was some ring rust but I knew that would come off after the first couple of rounds,” Gorges said.

By the time Tyner decided to turn up the heat in the eighth, he was too far behind in the mind of two of the three judges.

“Tyner was stronger but Andre was the more accurate fighter,” Canty said. “Andre had put too many rounds in the bank before that final round.”

Welterweight contender Lanardo Tyner was shocked in his own hometown when Andre Gorges won an eight round split decision at the Palace in Detroit, Michigan. Tyner started well, but it was Gorges who landed the better punches to outwork him in the mid rounds. The fight finished with some drama. Tyner nearly stopped him in the eight and final round. He hurt Gorges with right/left hand combos and almost put him away before the clock ran out. The scores were 77-74 Tyner, and 78-74 and 77-75 Gorges.

Tyner was shocked at the decision.

“It’s unbelievable, damn, that I can’t get some leeway in my own town,” said Tyner (24-4-1, 15 KOs) to the Detroit Free Press. “I can’t get a fair decision in Detroit. I thought it was a close fight, but I did enough to win.”

Gorges (10-1, 6 KOs) did not agree.

“I knew he was strong and had a good right hand, but that was it,” said Gorges. “He never really hurt me. He caught me with some punches, but I outboxed him. Now I know I’m in the top group in my weight class.”

  7. Detroit’s Lanardo Tyner shocked after losing bout at Palace

    By MIKE BRUDENELL

Detroit’s Lanardo (Pain Server) Tyner was devastated by his upset loss to lanky Windsor fighter Andre (Gorgeous) Gorges at the Palace on Saturday night.

Gorges beat the tough Tyner on points for the NABA-US welterweight championship despite Tyner almost knocking him out in the last of eight hard-fought rounds, which Tyner appeared to get the better of early.

“It’s unbelievable, damn, that I can’t get some leeway in my own town,” said a disappointed Tyner in his dressing room after the fight. “I can’t get a fair decision in Detroit. I thought it was a close fight, but I did enough to win.”
The judges scored the fight 77-74 Tyner, and 78-74 and 77-75 Gorges.

Tyner (24-4-1, 15 KOs) had Gorges virtually out on his feet with crushing lefts and rights to the head midway in the eighth.
Tyner stalked his taller opponent, but the pair fell after their feet tangled.
Gorges (10-1, 6 KOs), who had come on strong with stiff left jabs and accurate right hands in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds, regained his composure and held off Tyner until the bell.
Sporting a cut under his left eye, Gorges said he was confident he’d won.
“I knew he was strong and had a good right hand, but that was it,” said Gorges. “He never really hurt me. He caught me with some punches, but I outboxed him. Now I know I’m in the top group in my weight class.”
