“If Fitz Really Wants to Fight Me, We can Fight at Cruiserweight”

Fight fans,

Fitzroy Vanderpool calling himself a real world champion is disrespectful to Canadians that won real world titles! Fighters like Steve Molitor, Jean Pascal, Lucian Bute, Eric Lucas, and Lennox Lewis; these fighters have fought for real world championships! And also, real world champions have the bank accounts to prove that accomplishment. Fitz is the disrespectful one!

You won’t find many Canadian fighters more popular than Samuel ‘The Bull’ Vargas (10-0-1) of Mississauga, Ontario. An all action fighter with a heart that won’t quit, Vargas is currently packing fans into the Hershey Centre with his dramatic, victorious performances. Vargas earned The Boxing Examiner’s ‘Fight of the Year’ honours for his slugfest with Ahmad Cheikho (6-3-2) in 2011, beating out his other phenomenal, nominated contest, with Tebor Brosch (6-3-4) earlier in the year.  Since then Vargas has continued to impress, winning the National Championship of Canada welterweight title via devastating first round knockout of Manolis Plaitis (17-1-1) and stopping Hungarian hopeful Frenec Zold (14-7-0) in less than five rounds. Recently, TBE caught up with ‘The Bull’ to get his thoughts on all his recent success.

White, however, believes he was subject to some ‘home cooking’ – preferential judging of the home boxer – by those scoring the fight. “I was robbed in Moncton on March 10th,” explained White, “All Chris Norrad did was run and hold with a few slaps in between. He did not want to fight period and was scared to death. His goal was to survive the distance!”

Following Denton Daley’s (5-0-0) heated reply to Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) cruiserweight champion Jason Douglas (10-4-0), the Boxing Examiner caught up with the champ for a few quick questions.  First and foremost, we were interested in what Douglas thought about Daley’s accusations regarding ticket sales. For those of you who missed it, Daley claimed Douglas was merely using him to raise ticket sales, arguing that Douglas can’t draw fans in Mississauga. When asked about these accusations, Douglas stated the following: “I don’t care what Denton thinks because what has Denton done in boxing? The guy couldn’t even win a national amateur title at the age of 26! When it comes to tickets well, many people have told me they don’t like Denton, or his boxing style! So yes, a lot of people would buy tickets to watch me hurt him!”

Gadbois Pitches Pugilistic Shutout Over Daluz in St. Hyacinthe

“I’m Really Happy and Proud of the Fight”

By: GM Ross

Last Friday, in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, hometown hero Mick Gadbois (5-0-0) put on a boxing clinic against veteran American Robert Daluz (13-39-3), proving once again why so many folks ‘in the know’ are touting Gadbois as a future Canadian champion. “I’m really happy and proud of the fight I put together,” Gadbois told the Boxing Examiner. “I was intelligent and I didn’t take unnecessary shots. I worked in combinations and kept the pressure on him round after round.” The win is arguably the most impressive of Gadbois’ young and promising career. Furthermore, the shutout victory matches a feat accomplished by fellow Quebec pugilist Sebastien Gauthier (21-3-0), who handed DaLuz a goose egg last year.

When not training in St. Hyacinthe, Gadbois could be found working out with Gauthier and Pierre Bouchard of Interbox in Montreal. “As you could see during the fight, I was well prepared,” said Gadbois. “My preparation was perfect. My sparring was great. I was doing better and better every day leading up to the fight. Gauthier told me Daluz was tough and that he takes every punch. But, like I mentioned before, I wasn’t there for the home run.” Read More

‘Dangerous’ Denton Fires Back: “Jason Douglas is a bum!”

In an email to TBE co-founder Durell Wambolt, Denton Daley voiced his opinion regarding Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) cruiserweight champion Jason Douglas (10-4-0). Recently, Douglas called out Daley, looking for a fight on May 12 in Mississauga. The Canadian title, Douglas told TBE, would gladly be put up for grabs. Daley, however, seemed relatively cool in the wake of Douglas’ recent challenge. “After hearing this nonsense, the ignorant side of me would like nothing more than to fight Jason Douglas as soon as possible,” explained Daley, “but my experience says guys like Jason Douglas are a dime a dozen and if I jump at all the talk I’ll be fighting fights to support my opponent’s interest.”

Daley suspects Douglas is merely looking for a pay day, telling TBE: “I learned that Jason Douglas is a bum! He has no future, no following and can’t sell any tickets, so he is looking for a ‘cash cow’ like me because I’m convenient and people will pay to see me beat him down and Douglas realizes he will get paid in the process.” According to Daley, Douglas’ animosity towards him is a new development. “It’s funny, just the other day I was driving this guy home and now I’m a bitch when he realizes he can make money to fight me. He just proved how low he will go for a dollar.” Read More

“I Really Wish Denton Daley Wasn’t Afraid to Fight Me”: One on One with CPBC Cruiserweight Champion Jason Douglas

Posted by on February 25, 2012 at 20:44 pm

By: GM Ross

Jason ‘Friday the 13th’ Douglas (10-4-0) became the Canadian Professional Boxing Council (CPBC) Cruiserweight champion on September 10, 2011, by defeating former Canadian Boxing Federation (CBF) champion Frank ‘The Hammer’ White (7-4-2) of Sarnia, Ontario, via unanimous decision. Since then, Douglas has received no challenges from the nation’s contenders, while watching his own challenges be rejected. The Boxing Examiner caught up with the CPBC champion to his thoughts on National Championship Committee (NCC) cruiserweight champion Ryan Henney and Ontario prospect Denton Daley.

The Boxing Examiner: Hello Jason, how is training going lately? How do you feel as an athlete, at this point in your career?

Jason Douglas: I’ve been focusing on a few different things in training; and I feel great and physically stronger than ever.

TBE: Glad to hear that! You called out Ryan Henney a couple of months ago. Have you heard anything from him or his camp? Read More

♦ Claggett Still After Much Talked of Fight with Coveney ♦

By: GM Ross

Steve ‘the Dragon’ Claggett (13-1-1) of Calgary, Alberta, is eager to get back in action. In January, Claggett knocked out highly touted Ontarian Ryan ‘The Nightmare’ Wagner (4-1-0), firmly establishing himself as the top light welterweight in western Canada. Wagner, however, wasn’t the opponent Claggett initially hoped for. In October 2011, ‘The Dragon’ called out fellow Albertan Rory Coveney of Edmonton via The Boxing Examiner. Negotiations seemed to be going smoothly; Team Coveney replied to Claggett’s defi positively, telling fans their man was “looking forward to fighting Steve.”

Unfortunately, all was not as it seemed. Fans hoped to see the fight added to the December 9, 2011, KO Boxing Promotions show in Edmonton, but no such luck. Claggett has kept active since calling out Coveney, defeating both Antonio Dos Santos (2-3-0) and Ryan Wagner (4-1-0) by TKO. Wagner was coming off a unanimous decision victory over none other than Rory Coveney, making Claggett’s victory that much sweeter. Despite his success, Claggett’s ambition to fight Coveney hasn’t wavered. “There has been so much talk about this,” said Claggett. “We should give the Alberta boxing fans what we said we would.” Read More
