Every time I read or hear anything about pro heavyweight boxer Dean Storey, it makes me think back to the days of TV cowboy star Richard Boone of “Have Gun Will Travel,” where Boone played the part of hired gun, Paladin. Storey of course does not carry a firearm but you might have a hard time telling that to the 26 boxers he’s faced in his pro career.
Born on April 20, 1968, in Fredericton, Storey lived in Doaktown as a youngster. He traveled to Sackville and learned the basics of boxing from the late Bob Edgett, who was running the Bob Edgett Boys Club.

Canadian welterweight Antonin Décarie, the 14th ranked contender by the WBC, will be unable to face Lanardo Tyner at the Bell Centre in Montreal on April 20, due to a pulled muscle on his rib cage. The pull was suffered during training and is the same nagging injury that forced Décarie to pull out of his fight against former world champion Jose Luis Castillo last October. Décarie’s contest was scheduled as the co-feature for April 20 and would have been televised on ESPN2. The main bout featuring Adonis Stevenson’s challenge for the vacant WBC Silver Super Middleweight title will still go on as scheduled.

Shaw Festival Finds Suitable Substitution on Short Notice
THE BOXING EXAMINER

Domonique Dolton (11-0-0) has officially pulled out of his much anticipated NABA light middleweight title contest with champion Adam Trupish scheduled for April 17 in Toronto. With Trupish’s title defense slated for next Tuesday, Shaw Festival organizers rallied under pressure, successfully signing a suitable substitution for Dolton on short notice. Trupish’s new opponent will be Detroit fan favorite Daryl Cunningham (25-3-0). Fans will likely recall Cunningham’s contest with former Super Six Tournament contender Andre Dirrell (19-1-0) last year in California, which saw Dirrell defeat his fellow Michiganite via second round knockout. Since the loss, Cunningham has appeared in one contest, earning an eight round unanimous decision over journeyman Vance Garvey (8-36-6) of the Bronx via Indianapolis. The Shaw Festival organizers are currently trying to have the Trupish-Cunningham contest sanctioned for the NABA middleweight title.

The annual Shaw Festival charity fight night, scheduled for April 17, is shaping up nicely. In the main event, undefeated NABA light middleweight champion Adam ‘A-Bomb’ Trupish (10-0-0) of Windsor, Ontario, via Edmonton, Alberta, takes on Dominique Dolton (11-0-0) of Emanuel Stewart’s famous Kronk Boxing stable. Trupish is coming off his devastating first round knockout of fellow Canadian Janks Trotter (7-0-1) of Calgary, in the latter’s hometown in January. Fans will recall Trupish’s spectacular knockout victory over Rogerio Periera (16-1-0) of Brazil at last year’s Shaw Festival, earning ‘A-Bomb’ the NABA title. Dominque Dolton comes into his showdown with Trupish as the NABA USA and FECARBOX (WBC Caribbean) champion, both of which he won via majority decision over Donatas Bondoravas (12-2-1) last June.

Laces up the Gloves in Ferndale, Washington, this Saturday
By GM Ross

In his first bout since March of 2011, Andy Mavros (7-3-0) of Vancouver, British Columbia, heads to Ferndale, Washington, to tangle with Adrian Hermann (3-2-1) of Everett in a super middleweight contest at the Silver Reef Casino. The exact number of rounds remains TBA, but promoter Ringside Ticket is advertising the contest as a Northwest super middleweight title contest, suggesting the fight will be in the six to eight round range.
In his last appearance, Mavros fight hardened Manitoba veteran Kareem Chartrand (7-8-1) by fifth round knockout in super middleweight contest scheduled for six rounds. Hermann also won his latest bout, earning a unanimous decision over Len Bentley (1-0-0) in a cruiserweight four rounder. A win would put Mavros firmly in the mix of fighters currently vying for NCC super middleweight champion Eric Roy (6-3-0) or the vacant CPBC and NABA Canada versions of the title.
