Ontario vs. Quebec – Cross-Province Boxing Rivalry Continues Oct. 22nd

Posted by on September 15, 2011 at 09:41 am

TORONTO (September 15, 2011) – With all due respect to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, the long, rich arch-rivalry in sports between Ontario and Quebec is, perhaps, more prevalent today in boxing than even hockey.

The aforementioned rivalry heats up October 22 at The Hersey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, when unbeaten World Boxing Association (“WBA”) No. 11-rated Logan Cotton McGuinness, of Ontario, takes on and former world title challenger Benoit Gaudet, of Quebec, in the 10-round main event on a card presented by Hennessy Sports in association with Interbox and United Promotions.

The adversarial provincial competition continues November 5 at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec as two-time world champion Steve “The Canadian Kid” Molitor (33-2, 12 KOs), of Ontario, faces Sebastian Gauthier (21-2, 13 KOs), of Quebec, in the co-feature on the Lucian Bute-Glen Johnson card, presented by Interbox.

“The cross-provincial rivalry between Ontario and Quebec is intense in all sports,” promoter Adam Harris (Hennessy Sports) said.  “Canada’s rich boxing history is keeping this rivalry going strong today.  From Ontario’s Lennox Lewis, George Chuvalo and Tommy Burns, to Quebec’s Arturo Gatti, Lucan Bute and Jean Pascal, both provinces have had so many great boxers over the years, right up to now.  We’re proud to be continuing this heated boxing rivalry with McGuiness fighting Gaudet.”   Read More

(Thursday February 3, 2011) Tonight at the Molson Centre in Barrie, Ontario, Wild Card Promotions held the final press conference for tomorrow evenings “Super Brawl” card.  Rick Smiciklas of Wild Card Promotions has done everything possible to make this an exciting and crowd pleasing event and deserves a lot of credit.  In addition Rick gave everybody praise for helping him to put together the card.  Also in attendance was the legendary former Canadian Heavyweight champion George Chuvalo.

The Boxing Examiner.com was on hand to get quotes from each of the fighters in the main an co-main events.

First to take the microphone was Ray “Mount Kilimanjaro” Olubowale(8-4-1, 5KO’s) who has no love lost for his opponent from Edmonton, Tye “Big Sky” Fields (44-2, 40KO’s).  Fields questioned Olubowale’s courage and heart for having to pull out of their previously scheduled match last year due to a cut received during training.  This angered Olubowale who went on to state:

“I have taken him very seriously all along and was not taking a chance going into that fight with a cut so I pulled myself out of the fight.  I have never turned down a fight in my life!  All the talk of me being a chicken . . . it boils my blood and this is going to be my redemption!” Read More

Concord, ON – Inside the entertaining ‘Dave and Buster’s’ franchise, WCP founder Rick Smiciklas held a press conference confirming the upcoming card  for “Super Brawl,” now just weeks away. The head table was stacked with some of Canada’s well-known boxing personalities including the legendary George Chuvalo, current Canadian Boxing Federation (CBF) heavyweight champion Neven Pajkic, former CBF and Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Troy Ross and former CBF heavyweight king Ray Olubowale. UFC fighters Sean Pierson and Claude Patrick were seated alongside their boxing counterparts, showing moral support for their pugilistic brethren.

a

Smiciklas opened the floor confirming the final draft for this highly anticipated event.  Its official, by placing tight restraints regarding potential opponents for Troy Ross, the Ontario Athletic Commission has prevented Ross from fighting entirely at WCP2.  A disappointment for all, but by Ross’ own testament, “I’ll be on the next show that may be held sometime in May.”  Ross will be fighting in Montreal with Smiciklas close-by, the first weekend following the Barrie show. Neven Pajkic, The Canadian Heavyweight Championship and a History of Violence

Posted by on June 21, 2010 at 15:58 pm

By Mike Schmidt- Freelance

It would be an understatement to say that Canadian Heavyweight Champion Neven Pajkic is one of the more interesting characters in the world of heavyweight boxing. The Serbian, who stands six feet four inches and weighs in at a natural two hundred forty pounds is an imposing figure. Don’t let the dry sense of humor fool you. The eyes say a lot and in Pajkics case they remind you of Roberto Duran. There is some mischievous look in those eyes mixed with a threat of fearless violence, whether getting or giving. Not the kind of chap you would want to bump into on a dark night in an alley as my dear old dad used to like to say. Aside from boxing Pajkic has built up a nice filmography resume in a short period of time including rolls as “Mercenary # 6” in “Death Warrior” and “Richies Thug” in “A History of Violence.” Next week at Casino Rama, in Ontario, Canada, he will apply his own legal brand of a history of violence and rest assured it will not remotely look like the film version of “Richies Thug” getting dropped for the permanent count, so to speak, by famous actor Viggo Mortensen Read More
