Lucian Bute Will Fight In Canada On April 14, But Not On Showtime

Froch Front Runner For IBF Title Shot!

By Jeff Emond Jeffrey

During a telephone conference earlier today, January 27, Interbox president Jean Bedard confirmed that IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (30-0-0) will fight in Quebec on April 14, but not on the Showtime network. Since Bute has another fight to be showcased on Showtime PPV, it’s improbable that Interbox will turn to PPV competitor HBO. Nevertheless, Bedard confirmed that Bute will defend his title on Quebec soil, in either Montreal or Quebec City.

Lucian Bute’s trainer Stéphane Larouche stated that Bute will likely defend his belt against former two time WBC super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (28-2-0). It seems Interbox will do everything in their power to make the Bute-Froch fight happen for the Canadian boxing fans. Furthermore, Carl Froch wants to battle Bute and the feeling seems mutual. Unfortunately, Andre Ward (25-0-0) – the winner of the Super Six Tournament – is out of the picture due to an injured right hand. With Ward sidelined, Showtime wanted Bute to fight Andre Dirrell (20-1-0), but Bedard felt the matchup would lack appeal in Canada, where Dirrell is virtually unknown. Read More

Last week’s big news was Andre Ward’s (24-0-0) unanimous decision victory over Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch (28-1-0). With the win, Ward added the Ring Magazine, WBC and Super Six titles to his WBA ‘super’ super middleweight crown, making him the closest thing to a unified champion in his weight class. The other two champions are the WBO’s Robert Stieglitz (40-2-0) and the IBF’s Lucian Bute (30-0-0).

Rumors are already flying regarding potential Bute-Froch and Bute-Ward showdowns. According to Eastsideboxing.com, despite Froch’s loss to Ward, ‘the Cobra’s’ camp is in in talks with Bute’s people regarding a potential fight in England. As for Ward, the Ring Magazine champ said he’ll only fight Bute in Oakland, not Montreal or Quebec City. According to boxingscene.com, Bute doesn’t care where the fight with Ward occurs – Montreal, Quebec City, Oakland – he just wants Ward, in a ring, somewhere on the planet. Ward, however, has another stipulation. He wants Bute to win against some “A-level” guys before their fight happens. So, don’t be surprised if Bute-Froch happens before Ward agrees to unify the titles. Read More

On Saturday, November 5, 2011, Interbox presented Lucian Bute versus Glen Johnson from Quebec City, Quebec, live on Showtime PPV. The main event was complemented by six thrilling bouts featuring Pier Olivier Coté, Steve Molitor, Sebastien Gauthier, Sebastien Demers, Kevin Bizier and other talented pugilists. The event marked Lucian Bute’s first contest in Quebec City since his second fight with Librado Andrade. An impressive 15,306 fans were in attendance.

In the twelve round IBF super middleweight championship attraction, defending champion Lucian Bute ( 29-0-0, 24 KO), a native Romanian, now fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, faced the “Road Warrior” Glen Johnson ( 51-15-2, 35 KO), a former IBF light heavyweight champion from Miami, Florida. The contest marked Bute’s ninth title defence and Johnson’s second super middleweight title challenge in a row.

Johnson is a proud warrior with many accomplishments in the ring, including the 2004 fighter of the year award. The “Road Warrior” came into this contest with victories over Roy Jones Jr, Antonio Tarver, Eric Harding and Clinton Woods. Johnson also earned a victory over Allan Green – Sebastien Demers’ opponent on the card – in the Showtime Super Six Tournament. In his sixty-nine fight career, Johnson has been stopped just once, by future hall of famer, Bernard Hopkins in 1997. Bute knew this would be a tough defence. No stranger to success himself, Bute holds notable victories on Edison Miranda, Librado Andrade, William Joppy and Alejandro Berrio. Most recently, Bute needed less than four rounds to stop undefeated contender Jean Paul Mendy (29-0-1) in Romania. Read More

QUEBEC CITY, Canada (Nov. 6, 2011) – Lucian Bute passed the toughest test of his thriving career with a dominant unanimous decision win over Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson to defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight title for the ninth time. The championship bout was scored 120-108 twice and 119-109. In the co-feature, rising Canadian prospect Pier-Olivier Côté demolished Jorge Teron via knockout only 33 seconds into round two of the junior welterweight bout on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada on SHOWTIME®.

The Romanian-born Bute (30-0, 24 KOs) proved too much for the oft-dubbed “ageless” Johnson who finally showed his age. Despite Johnson’s tendency to make fight’s exciting by coming forward and applying pressure, the fighters kept their distance for the first several rounds. By the middle of the bout, it was Bute who closed the gap and attempted to engage his former sparring partner. The 31-year-old Bute, of Montreal, began to land power shots with both hands, taking chances by staying in close in an attempt to close the show via knockout – to no avail – for the 15,306 fans in attendance.

When asked if he was disappointed that he was unable to close out his seventh straight title defense via stoppage, Bute responded, “No, I’m very happy. This is a great experience. Fighting Glen Johnson is an honor for me. I needed a fight like this.” Read More

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA (Nov. 2, 2011) – A sea of media turned out at the popular Quebec sports bar La Cage Aux Sports for a chance to hear from undefeated superstar Lucian Bute and former world champ Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson on Wednesday, just three days before Bute makes the ninth defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight title on Saturday, Nov. 5, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The SHOWTIME Championship Boxing event, which will originate from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, also features a 12-round junior welterweight bout between rising Canadian 140-pound star Pier-Olivier Côté (17-0, 11 KOs), of Quebec City and Jorge Luis Teron (25-2-1, 17 KOs), of the Bronx, New York.

One of the largest box office draws in boxing, the undefeated, Romanian-born Bute will enter the ring with an unblemished record of 29-0 with 24 KOs.  Bute has registered knockouts in seven of his eight title defenses and has only gone the distance five times in his professional career.

Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs), a legend for his bouts against Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver, will make his 10th appearance in a world title fight. The 42-year-old Jamaican-born Johnson has fought out of Miami for almost two decades.  The former world champ, who earned the nickname “The Road Warrior” for never shying away from challenging an opponent on his home turf, will once again travel to enemy territory for a shot at a championship.  Read More

Al Bernstein Calls Bute-Johnson “Treat For Fans”

Posted by on November 2, 2011 at 07:38 am

When IBF Super Middleweight Champ Lucian Bute defends his crown against Road Warrior Glen Johnson on November 6, it could be an “instant classic,” according to Hall of Fame boxing announcer Al Bernstein.

Bernstein will be ringside call the fight on Showtime Championship Boxing, along with Steve Albert and Antonio Tarver. It’s a match he is anxious to announce, and part of the reason is Glen Johnson. “Johnson has not been in a bad fight since…well, maybe never,” Al said. He added “Glen makes fan friendly fights, and his last match with Carl Froch was outstanding. He has come down in weight to 168 at age 42-that’s almost unheard of, and he’s still performing at a very high level.”

Al says the Champion, Bute, has changed his identity in recent fights, and that too augers well for this match. Al said, “Some still think of Bute as a boxer-puncher, but now he has transformed himself into a boxer-PUNCHER. He has six straight title defenses by knockout. He is perhaps the best body puncher in boxing. He will not run from Johnson.”

The match can be seen in the United States on Showtime and on Super Channel in Canada. For more information visit www.sho.sports.comand www.superchannel.ca.

1-on-1 with Glen Johnson & Lucian Bute

Posted by on October 25, 2011 at 19:02 pm

By Jeff Emond Jeffrey

On November 5, undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (29-0-0) will make his ninth title defence against none other than “the Road Warrior,” Glen Johnson, a former IBF light heavyweight champion himself. This afternoon, the Boxing Examiner spoke with both Bute and Johnson about their upcoming Quebec City showdown.

The Boxing Examiner : Good afternoon “Road Warrior.” How are you?

Glen Johnson : I am very good, thank you.

TBE : When you’re  in the ring with Bute , how will you fight him to secure a win?

GJ : Well, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but you will see on November 5th. One thing is for sure, Bute will feel pressure like he never had before. I am ready for him and I will make him fight in the ring with the pressure I will put on him.

TBE : Bute is known to be a very good outside fighter,  with a long left jab and powerful hooks. He also possesses a very good counter left uppercut, which he uses as soon as a fighter comes on the inside, just like what he did to Edison Miranda. Are you concerned about the left uppercut?
