Lucian Bute will fight in Canada, April 14, But Not on Showtime: Froch Front Runner for IBF Title Shot!

By Jeff Emond Jeffrey

During a telephone conference earlier today, January 27, Interbox president Jean Bedard confirmed that IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (30-0-0) will fight in Quebec on April 14, but not on the Showtime network. Since Bute has another fight to be showcased on Showtime PPV, it’s improbable that Interbox will turn to PPV competitor HBO. Nevertheless, Bedard confirmed that Bute will defend his title on Quebec soil, in either Montreal or Quebec City.

Lucian Bute’s trainer Stéphane Larouche stated that Bute will likely defend his belt against former two time WBC super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (28-2-0). It seems Interbox will do everything in their power to make the Bute-Froch fight happen for the Canadian boxing fans. Furthermore, Carl Froch wants to battle Bute and the feeling seems mutual. Unfortunately, Andre Ward (25-0-0) – the winner of the Super Six Tournament – is out of the picture due to an injured right hand. With Ward sidelined, Showtime wanted Bute to fight Andre Dirrell (20-1-0), but Bedard felt the matchup would lack appeal in Canada, where Dirrell is virtually unknown. Read More

Interview with Three Time Canadian Amateur Champion Yves Ulysses Jr

By Jeff Emond Jeffrey

Training in the the Gym “Le champion” in Montreal, Quebec, Yves Ulysses Jr had already proved he was a promising star in the boxing world with his dedication to the sweet science, fast hand speed and movements. Now boxing in the amateur ranks, Yves will have to decide between the London Olympics or becoming a professional prize fighter. Either way, boxing fans will be thrilled to see him in action.

The Boxing Examiner : How did you become interested in boxing?

Yves Ulysses Jr: It really was seeing Floyd Mayweather Jr in action. This guy is unbelievable in the ring. Especially when he fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. Those are two artists of the game. More so, they fought for millions of dollars. So I told myself, I would like to do that. Boxing is wonderful, sometimes it can be a war, but you have to play a chess match to win that war. When I first entered the gym at eighteen years of age, I said : I want to become a world champion. I soon learned that boxing was a world of sacrifices and hard work. Read More

Marcel “Little Magic” Maillet (0-2-0) of Moncton’s Last Round Boxer won his four round, middleweight bout over Ryan Burgess (debut) of Truro, Nova Scotia, at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Centre Saturday night via a unanimous decision. The event was hosted by Caveman Promotions. Maillet fought relentlessly against a game opponent, landing frequently throughout the fight. “Stormin” Norman Peters (1-7-0) of Last Round Boxer lost by second round knockout to Stephane Landry (1-1-0) of Quebec via Halifax, in a cruiserweight match-up. Peters took the early lead, out boxing the rugged Landry in the first round with an effective left jab and some strong combinations, which dazed Landry. Peters took command again early in round two and it appeared Landry was headed for defeat. Several punches found their mark on the back of Peters head in close quarters before he took a tremendous right cross and was unable to beat the count. Read More

Quebec boxer Ariane Fortin, left, says she will now fight for a country other than Canada at the London Olympic Games.

a

Quebec boxer and Canadian Olympic hopeful Ariane Fortin accused Boxing Canada of bias Monday night during an interview on Radio-Canada.

Fortin lost the 75-kg Canadian championship to her friend Mary Spencer of Windsor, Ont. on Friday night.

The accusation of bias shocked Spencer. The two grew up together on the international boxing circuit. They are friends and former roommates.

It’s hard to score a point and win when you have judges who fixed the result in advance and when you work against the [boxing] federation,” Fortin told Radio-Canada in French.

Fortin also said in French that Spencer receives preferential treatment in the English media because she is from Ontario. Read More

TORONTO (January 16, 2012) – Old-time boxing returns Saturday night, February 11 to the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario as unbeaten welterweight Samuel Vargas and dangerous Manolis Plaitis headline a competitive, entertaining card presented by United Promotions in association with Hennessy Sports.

The Feb. 11 show kicks-off the third season of boxing at Hershey Centre for United Promotions, which is comprised of three Ontario boxing promoters – Don MacDonald, Adam Harris (Hennessy Sports) and Tyler Buxton (Buxton Promotions).

“We are promoting boxing in Mississauga, only a 10-minute drive from Toronto, as a united team rather than individuals and it’s been a perfect business relationship,” MacDonald explained. “We have more professional boxers and fans than ever before in Ontario. What we’ve accomplished in two years, well, give us two more and Ontario will exceed boxing in Montreal. We’re changing attitudes and building a new fan base. We’re building our product by real promoting. You’ll never see an 8-0 guy fighting somebody 5-10. Read More
